Ferrer, the last Spaniard to beat Nadal on clay, needed treatment on his back in the second set. His younger opponent showed no mercy as he unleashed his full repertoire of shots, clinching victory in two hours eight minutes.
Ferrer matched Nadal stroke for stroke in the first set but squandered two set points while leading 5-4. Once he lost the first set, the Spaniard hardly showed the fight to come back into the game against an effervescent Nadal.
