Spanish young gun Rafael Nadal began his campaign to become the first man in 23 years to win the French Open title on his debut with a 6-1, 7-6, 6-1 victory over Germany's Lars Burgsmueller.
The tournament favourite, who has already collected five claycourt titles this season, was given a useful test by his German opponent in the second set but the result never appeared to be in doubt.
Having won the tiebreak 7-4 the fourth seed unleashed a fierce array of groundstrokes in the third set as Burgsmueller struggled to keep pace from the baseline.
Nadal will next face Begium's Xavier Malisse for a place in the third round.
