Pictures from Day 1
World number one Lindsay Davenport recovered from a sluggish start to move past Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in her opening match.
The top seed looked rusty at first but stepped up a gear after dropping the first set.
The powerful American showed signs of nerves again in the closing stages and was broken while serving for the match in the seventh game of the final set.
Srebotnik, ranked 51st in the world, bravely survived three match-points in the next game but then hit a forehand long on the fourth to bow out after one hour and 44 minutes.
