The second Grand Slam of the year began in the French capital, Paris, on Monday.

The French singles men's championship, held at Roland Garros, was first staged in 1891. The women's singles was added six years later. It was not until 1925 that the French Tennis Federation decided to open the event to the best foreign players.

Roland-Garros was a French aviation pioneer who, on September 23, 1913, became the first man to fly a plane over the Mediterranean.
