Laureus World Sports Awards

Philip Morse, Mike Dee and Jim Rice of the Boston Red Sox with the Laureus Spirit of Sport award.

The Red Sox, who last year won baseball's World Series for the first time in 86 years, received a special Spirit of Sport Award.

Their victory, when they beat the St Louis Cardinals 4-0 in the best of seven matches, ended one of sport's most enduring 'curses'. From the day in 1920 when the Red Sox sold the legendary Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees, they never won the World Series. Four times the Red Sox reached the World Series and four times they lost.

On their way to the World Series, the Red Sox also engineered the greatest comeback in baseball history against the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series. Having lost the first three games of the best of seven play-off, the Red Sox had to win all remaining four to go through to the final, and they created history by doing just that.

It was a sporting epic, one of the greatest sporting performances ever witnessed in American sport.
