Anju to lead India's challenge

Ace long jumper Anju Bobby George would lead India's challenge in the Asian Grand Prix series to be held in Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand later this month, the Athletics Federation of India announced on Saturday.

Anju would lead a 24-member team which comprised of several leading athletes including Anil Kumar (100m), Jagdish Bishnoi (javelin throw), Sunita Rani (1500m) and Neelam J Singh (discus).

AFI said the athletes were picked for the meet after a two-day selection meeting of the Federation, which concluded today, under the chairmanship of G S Randhawa.

The meeting was attended by J S Saini, Rajesh Tomar, Sri Ram Singh, Bahadur Singh, Suresh Babu, Lalit Bhanot besides government observer Shiny Wilson.

Surabaya in Indonesia would hold the first leg on June 18, followed by Singapore on June 21 and Songkhla in Thailand on June 24.

Men: Piyush Kumar, Anil Kumar (100m); Bhupinder Singh, Satbir Singh (400m); Ghamanda Ram (800m); H Krishna Mohan (110m hurdles); Ranvijay Singh, Navpreet Singh (shot put); Jagdish Bishnoi, Sunil Goswami (javelin throw); Maha Singh (long jump); Hari Shankar Roy (high jump)

Women: Poonam Tomar (100m); S Geetha, Rajwinder Kaur (400m), Sunita Rani, Sinimol Paulose, Sunita (1500m); K Chitra Soman (400m hurdle); Seema Antil, Neelam J Singh, Krishna Punia (discus); Harwant Kaur (discus); Anju Bobby George (long jump).
