Tournament organisers released a brief statement on Thursday which said the 28-year-old Australian had pulled out of the first Grand Slam of the year in Melbourne.
Philippoussis tore his adductor muscle during last week's Hopman Cup in Perth and withdrew from this week's Sydney International.
The big-serving Philippoussis slipped down the world rankings after winning only 11 matches last year. But Australian Open organisers had said they would give him a wildcard entry if he did not make the field on his ranking.
