Churchill Brothers coach decides to quit

Owning moral responsibility for the continuing dismal show by Goan outfit Churchill Brothers and expressing displeasure over the team set-up, its coach Shabbir Ali has announced to resign from the post.

"I have decided to quit as the team is unable to produce results under my coaching even after six rounds in the National Football League," a dejected Shabbir told reporters in Kozhikode on Friday night after his team was thrashed 3-1 by State Bank of Travancore.

Going into yesterday's tie as a better-balanced side with the services of three foreigners and former Indian striker, I M Vijayan, Churchill Brothers, still in search of a win in the League, could not break the jinx.

Churchill now has only two points, both coming from drawn matches, in six outings and is left at the bottom of the points table.

Flaying the manner in which new players were recruited into the team, Shabbir, who coached Salgaocar to the National Football League title in 1998-99, said, "it is humiliating to continue in this fashion when the players fail to perform as a team".

Asked if his decision to resign is final, Shabbir said he had informed the club management about his decision soon after yesterday's loss, the fourth defeat in the League so far.

Admitting that his team is also plagued by injuries to India players, Bijen Singh and Rocky Baretto, the coach who had also coached another Goan team Fransa Pax, said he could not inspire the players which ultimately forced him to take the decision.
