Former champion Andy Roddick (left) suffered the humiliation of a first-round defeat at the U.S. Open on Tuesday, going down 7-6, 7-6, 7-6 to an inspired Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.
Starting brightly on his 23rd birthday, the American fourth seed served for the first set at 5-3 but Muller broke to love and then carved out three successful tiebreaks to clinch a famous win.
"I have no idea (how I did it)," Muller said of the victory on his U.S. Open debut.
