Lance Armstrong: Fallen Icon?

It is not the first time such accusations have cropped up.

Armstrong has long been looked at suspiciously, thanks to his consistent dominance over the cycling's world premier event.

In 1999, he tested positive for triamcinolone, an ingredient of a legal skin ointment he had taken to treat road rash and sores.

At the time, his explanation was accepted. Supporters attribute this latest attack to jealousy, sensationalist journalism and even anti-Americanism.

Armstrong, now retired, has responded with a curt statement on his web site: 'I will simply restate what I have said many times: I have never taken performance enhancing drugs.'
