Button still hoping to partner Barrichello

Jenson Button says Rubens Barrichello has made the right move in leaving Formula One champions Ferrari for BAR.

Whether the Briton will be able to stay on and line up as the Brazilian's team mate next year is no nearer to being resolved, however.

"If I'm lucky enough to be here I think we will be a very good team," said Button at the Istanbul Park circuit that hosts Turkey's first Grand Prix on Sunday.

"We're both reasonably experienced, he's obviously got a few years on me, but I think we will work together very well and it will be good competition."

Button wants to stay at BAR, who are also eager to retain his services, but agreed a contract last year to move to Williams.

He is now trying to extricate himself from the deal, with Williams facing a year with Cosworth engines after their break-up with BMW.

"I've been talking with Frank [Williams] about the situation, yes. I don't think I should say anything on it really, it's between us to try and resolve behind the scenes," said Button.

"It's just us getting down to sort out the situation, really."

TROUBLED SEASON

The 25-year-old, third overall last year, has scored all but one of BAR's points in a troubled season for the Honda-powered team and their Japanese driver Takuma Sato.

Button said having two strong drivers is essential for a team still seeking their first Grand Prix win after seven seasons in existence.

"It's so important," he said. "You definitely need two drivers who are capable of scoring points consistently.

"We all make mistakes but its about being as consistent as you can, making as few mistakes as possible and scoring points in every race."

Button said Barrichello, seen as a loyal number two at Ferrari to seven times world champion Michael Schumacher, would benefit from being in a team that could guarantee him equal treatment.

"It's a great situation for him to be in a team where everything is equal," he said.

"We still really don't know what he can do in a Formula One car when he is given equal equipment."

The Briton also revealed that BAR had consulted him on their future driver choice.

"They first of all asked which driver I think should partner me in 2006 if I am able to be here and Rubens was one of the drivers' names that I mentioned," he said.

"It was really just a casual conversation."
