The 22-year-old Argentinean out-stroked Safin 7-5, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3 to slide into his fifth Grand Slam quarter final.
"I was frustrated. I couldn't play. It was a great opportunity to fight for another title. It's a pity. I don't know why it happened. I never had this problem before. I'm getting old," said Safin who had blisters on both hands.
