50 Years On, Celebrating the Miracle Mile

The current world record for the mile, held by Morocco star Hicham El Guerrouj [in picture with Bannister], is 3 minutes 43 seconds. Bannister -- who gave up running soon after making history to pursue a medical career -- believes 'they [athletes] might lower it to 3 minutes 30 seconds in another 50 years. But that would be the absolute limit. I cannot imagine a man running under the 3-minute mark -- without drugs, at least. One simply hopes that this Pandora's Box of biological treatments can be stopped -- because, in theory, it's possible to alter the human body by using drugs to make muscles grow bigger. The record wouldn't matter then.'

Sir Roger has no intention of selling the vest and spikes he wore when he ran that race. Experts estimate they could fetch him anywhere between £35,000 and £100,000 (between Rs 2,695,000 and Rs 7,700,000)
