50 Years On, Celebrating the Miracle Mile

On May 6, 1954, 50 years ago today, Roger Bannister ran the mile under four minutes, the first human being to ever do so.
It was a feat that had eluded countless champion athletes for many, many years until a 25-year-old British medical student completed the distance in 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds, at Oxford.
