India's Somdev Varman concluded his giant killing spree upsetting fourth seed Bulgarian Yordan Kanev to clinch the title in the final of the US$ 10,000 ONGC ITF Futures men's tennis tournament at Kolkata on Sunday.

The wild card entrant, who had toppled three seeds on his way to the summit round, registered a straight set 6-4, 6-2 win in the final at the Saturday Club.

With his first-ever win in the international men's final, the 19-year-old Assam player picked up eight ATP points and bagged US$ 900 as prize money from the tournament.

The tall and strongly built Bulgarian, who started as favourite given his past record of winning three international finals, took a 4-2 lead in the opening set before Varman shrugged of his initial nervousness and won the next four games in a row to win the set 6-4.

The hot climatic condition then took its toll on the Bulgarian.

The Indian lad, on the other hand, played some brilliant tennis, running down everything Kanev hurled at him, producing some fine passing shots of both the flanks before finally forcing Kanev to hit a ball long to win the set 6-2.
