A disappointed Hewitt after losing his quarter-final.
The former world number one was made to look like a claycourt novice as Gaudio unsettled him with his groundstrokes.
"I think there are a lot of positives to come out of the last couple of months. I felt like I was hitting the ball as well as I ever have in the French Open. I will play Queen's (the Stella Artois Championships) and then have a week off before going to Wimbledon," Hewitt said.
