It turned out to be a profitable outing for India as it earned as many as five Olympic quota places and 10 gold medals in the 10th Asian Shooting Championships that came to an end in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Wednesday.

The five berths -- two in the shot gun event and three in the rifle event – took India's overall Olympics places to eight following the success of Anjali Bhagwat, Abhinav Bindra and Rajyawardhan Rathore in earlier competitions.

The others to make the grade are Mansher Singh, Manavjit Singh, Deepali Deshpande, Gagan Narang and Suma Shirur.

In the events scheduled on the final day, Jaspal Rana failed miserably to finish 11th with 580 points out of 600 in the men's 25-metres center-fire pistol, National coach Sunny told said from Kuala Lumpur.

Ashok Pandit (573) and Naresh Kumar (556) ended up in disappointing 15th and 29th positions respectively.

In the junior women's 50-meter spot rifle, Sindhu U scored 547 of 600 to be 11th and Navdeep Kaur Dhillon (543) and Sharda Thapa (535) remained at 12th and 14th spots, respectively.

India won six medals in the senior and 12 medals in the junior events as its medal tally read 10-4-4 at the end of the championships, which was dominated by China, who collected 28 gold medals.
