An exhausted but delighted England captain Martin Johnson holds up the William Webb Ellis Cup.
"It couldn't have been any closer and I'm just happy I'm on the right side," Johnson said afterwards.
England, the country of rugby's origin, is now the world champion in the sport for the first time. The English team also strengthened their number one ranking with this win.
