The Final Confrontation

Wilkinson, who dropped a goal seconds from the end of extra time to seal the Cup, celebrates with centre Will Greenwood (number 13) after the final whistle.

Wilkinson, who had failed with three drop goal attempts earlier in the final, took up position deep behind the England forwards as the match appeared headed for sudden death. Skipper Martin Johnson and scrumhalf Matt Dawson attacked, drawing the Australian defence in. The ball was then delivered to Wilkinson and the flyhalf snapped the ball off his less preferred right foot between the uprights.
