But the accolades kept coming in as he won. Then tragedy struck. He was diagnosed with cancer. Few ever recover from the deadly disease; fewer lead normal lives. Armstrong was pronounced healthy in February of 1997.
For one who had been an active sportsman all his life, leaving cycling behind was tough. He decided against it.
Determined to prove that he could compete with the best, Armstrong embarked on a rigorous training regimen, to prepare for a possible comeback. Cofidis, his Tour team, dropped him. But the cyclist said he would be back and better. It was a lonely road back to the top, but, as they say, all that counts is how many times you get up after a fall; not how many times you fall!
