His exit had none of the drama that Pete Sampras' retirement on Monday had. Nevertheless, there was sadness in the air and lumps in many throats as Michael Chang left the court for the last time. The Chinese-American lost to Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

The youngest man ever to win a Grand Slam title -- he won the 1989 French Open, aged 17 years, 3 months -- had announced his decision to retire from competitive tennis after the US Open.
