Indian shooters win three
more gold medals

Indian shooters continued their fine showing, picking three more gold medals, to take their tally to four at the 17th Commonwealth Games in Manchester, on Sunday.

Following Abhinav Bindra and Sameer Ambeken's record-shattering performance in the men's 10 metre Rifle Pairs event yesterday, the talented duo of Anjali (Vedpathak) Bhagwat and Suma Shirur gave India its second gold, winning the women's 10 metre Air Rifle Pairs event.

Moraad Ali Khan and Rajyavardhan Singh also kept the Indian flag flying high by clinching a gold in the men's Trap Pairs event. The duo aggregated 184 points to take the coveted gold in the men's Trap Pairs after a stiff challenge from the Australian pair of Michael Diamond and Russel Mark, who also had 184 points. Sydney Olympic gold medallist Richard Faulds and John Bellamy could only manage third place in the event, scoring 182.

Later, Samresh Jung and Vivek Singh gave India its fourth gold of the meet, and third of the day, when they won the men's 50 metre Pistol Pairs final.

Jung and Singh aggregated 1088 points. David Moore and Bruce Quick of Australia finished with four points less for the silver, while Daniel Francois Van Tonder and Frederick Willem Van Tonder of South Africa bagged the bronze, with 1074 points

In the women's 10 metre Air Rifle Pairs, Anjali and Suma aggregated 795 points to finish ahead of the Canadian pair of Sharon Bowes and Jacklyn Mecredy, who had 14 points less. England's Louise Minett and Victoria Eaton claimed the bronze with 776 points.

A silver medal also came India's way on Sunday through Shweta Chaudhary and Sheila Kanungo, who tallied 744 points in the women's 10 metre Air Pistol Pairs final.

Kim Eagles and Dorothy Hare of Canada bagged the gold with 747 points and Annemarie Forder and Lalita Yauhleuskaya of Australia took the bronze with 744 points.

On Saturday, the 19-year-old Chandigarh-based Bindra and partner Ambekar produced the highest scores in five of the six rounds in the series to finish clear of the Malaysian pair of Mohomad Erman Zakaria and Mohammad Hameleay Mutalib, who had to be content with the silver, with a total of 1164 points.

Pistol king Jaspal Rana and partner Samaresh Jung were the other heroes yesterday as they picked up a silver medal in the men's air pistol pairs event with 84 points.
