"If you were going to do a Frankenstein," says Brian Sutton, coach of nine Australian Olympians, "if you were going to put a swimmer together from scratch, you'd build Ian Thorpe."
So much has been written about Thorpe that it is difficult to summarise the effect he's had on his sport. But one thing that we do know for sure is that before long his name will be mentioned in the same breath as that of idols: Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis, Michael Jordan, and Kieren Perkins.
