Thorpe's ascent has been rapid. He became the youngest male swimmer to be named on an Australian team since John Konrads in 1956, when as a 14-year-old Thorpe was included in the Pan Pac team to go to Japan in 1997. He has won at the Olympics, the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games, the list could go on.
But despite all the fame and success he still remains very modest. A few months before the Sydney Olympics 2000, he was in a television studio waiting room with Shane Gould, one of Australia's greatest swimmers. She was showing him her Olympic medals and, noting his gaze, told him, "You'll have a bunch of your own soon." Thorpe replied, "I'd be happy with one."
He won three golds and two silvers at Sydney.
