Thorpe took up swimming seriously at the age of eight and a year later won his first competition. It was a tough start since he was allergic to chlorine.
Wearing a nose clip and swimming with his head out of the water, Thorpe continued swimming. Eventually the allergy gave way to his single-minded determination.
