Indian Airlines, Tata's storm
into last eight

Indian Airlines, Delhi, and Tata Sports Club, Mumbai, recorded easy victories to enter the last eight stage in the 40th Bombay Gold Cup hockey tournament at the Mahindra stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.

In pre-quarter-final matches, Indian Airlines, who led 3-0 at half-time, beat Corps of Signals, Jalandhar, 5-1 while Tata Sports Club, who led by a solitary goal at the breather, sidelined Central Bank, Mumbai, 3-0.

Indian Airlines, with a number of internationals in their ranks, outplayed their rivals in all departments of the game. Skipper Dilip Tirkey scored from the first two penalty-corners his team got, in the tenth and 27th minutes.

Five minutes before the interval Y S Rawat was bang on the target and in the 43rd minute centre-half Altaf-ur-Rehman made it 4-0 with a field goal.

In the 56th minute, Sameer Dad scored off a Lazarus Barla pass to make it 5-0.

Suresh Kumar scored the consolation goal for Signals with just three minutes to go for the hooter.

Tata's had to wait till the 34th minute of the first-half to open their account, when forward Naved Ali found the mark following a penalty-corner, off a pass from defender B N Madan.

Raju Bagade made it 2-0 in the 51st minute, off a Madan pass, and Asad Khan rounded off the tally four minutes later after being put through by Claes Ferreira.
