US, Cuba leading contenders for 4x100m relay

The Rediff Team

The US men's relay team easily qualified as expected for the final of the 4x100m relay.

In the first heat of the 4x100m relays, the US team won with a time of 37.82 secs, almost four hundreths of a second faster than the fast finishing Jamaicans, who timed 38.27, their national best, to come in second. France came in third. The top three automatically qualify for the final on Saturday night. The Italians were fourth.

The second heat was a slightly closer affair, with Cuba finishing first with a time of 38.16, seconds ahead of Brazil and Japan, who came in second and third respectively.

There was good news for the home fans as the Aussies came in fourth and qualified having posted a better time than the Italians.
