Who, when, what, where?

Day seven of the track and field competition begins with the men's 50km walk, featuring reigning world champion Robert Korzeniowski of Poland, against world record holder Valeriy Sptysn of Russia.

The real focus, though, will be on the track with the men's 50km walk, the steeplechase, the 1500m and the heats of the glamourous relays scheduled to be run.

In the 1500, it is Hicham El Guerrouej who holds interest, after a disastrous outing in Atlanta 1996. The threat will come from Noah Ngeny, with the legendary Noureddine Morceli having failed to qualify in the heats.

The US women's relay squads, hoping to power Marion Jones to fourth and fifth golds, will come under enormous pressure this morning as they come out to qualify in both the 4x100 and 4x400.

Threats will come from the likes of Russia, Great Britain, Australia, Nigeria and the Bahamas.

In the men's, the US are firm favourites to take both the relays, with Maurice Greene anchoring them in the 4x100 and Michael Johnson in the 4x400. Great Britain and Brazil could pose threats, but the biggest threat of them all come from the US penchant to fluff their baton changes.

Kenyans, world leaders in the steeplechase, will pin its hopes on Bernard Barmasai to take the event, ahead of Morocco's Ali Ezzeine, the leading challenger.

The highlight of the day, though, will be the face off between Heike Drechsler of Germany, the former world champion and sentimental favourite, and Marion Jones in the long jump pit, with Jones looking for gold medal number three in what is her weakest event.
