India vs South Korea: Play of the Day

Jaideep Singh

South Korean striker Song Seung-Tae's reverse hit from the top of the stricking circle, after picking up a square-pass from Kim Kyung Seok, left the Indian defence dumbfounded, and had to be the pick of the day's play in the Pool B encounter between India and South Korea.

The breathtaking goal had an electrifying impact on the Korean fortunes. It also woke India up from slumber, though it must be added that the wakeup call did not produce any results worth mentioning.

The goal was as much the handiwork of Kim Kyung Seok as it was of Song, for it was Seok who tore through the Indian defence along the right flank, drew the defenders out, and found the unmarked Song with a defence-splitting pass at the top of the striking circle.

Song picked up the pass on his right, switched sides, and at full stretch, crashed it into goal before Indian goalkeeper Jude Menezes could spot the change of direction.

That goal effectively put the Koreans in the race for a semifinal spot. For India, it came as a deep sword cut, from which the blood continued to flow for the rest of the game.

Song deserves a nine out of ten, for that one.
