Chelsea heads off for Sydney

President Bill Clinton's 20-year old daughter Chelsea set off for Australia on Tuesday as part of the official U.S. delegation to the Olympic Games.

Chelsea, who took the fall quarter off from her studies at Stanford University to spend more time with her father whose term ends in January and her mother who is running for the U.S. Senate seat from New York, left on Tuesday morning from Andrews Air Force Base.

She accompanied head of delegation Donna Shalala, the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Other members of the delegation included the U.S. Ambassador to Australia Edward Gnehm, White House drug policy director Barry McCaffrey and Thurgood Marshall, the co-vice chair of the White House Task Force on the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.

During a visit earlier this year to Olympic athletes training in California, Clinton said he would not be in Sydney for the Olympics but that Chelsea would be there "to cheer the teams on."

Chelsea has traveled often with her mother, first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, and has joined her father on several recent foreign trips. But this is the first time she will represent the first family alone on a foreign trip.
