Match Report

The Vintage XI again won the toss and elected to bat. This time the story was different. They had a great start with Hobbs and Headley adding 82 runs. Then Warne, on the helpful Sydney pitch struck. He dismissed Headley, Bradman (cheaply at 10) and Pollock (0) and Vintage XI fell away to 110 for 3. The two Englishmen retrieved the situation partially before Hadlee dismissed Hobbs for a well-made 79. Sobers struck twice and then Warne cleaned up the tail to restrict Vintage XI to a very modest 210. They did not even play out the overs. Warne had an outstanding spell of spin bowling taking 5 for 44 in 10 overs. Sobers, with his left arm spin, supported him very effectively.

This time the Moderns could sense victory from the beginning. Tendulkar started the innings very well with a run-a-ball cameo. Then Lindwall and Miller reduced them to 69 for 3, including Richards for 8. When Sobers departed, they were precariously placed at 104 for 4. Then the two left-handers, Lara and Bevan got together and had a match winning partnership of 108 to take the Moderns to a well-deserved win. Both played well paced out innings of 60+. The absence of an attacking spin bowler such as O'Reilly/Grimmett instead of the more accurate Verity was keenly felt.

There is no argument about the Man of the Match. Warne for his 5 for 44, including the wickets of Bradman, Pollock and Headley.
