Wimbledon: Venus Williams wins women's singles title

E-Mail this report to a friend

American Venus Williams won the women's singles title at Wimbledon on Saturday beating defending champion compatriot Lindsay Davenport 6-3, 7-6. This was only the second grand slam final in her career.

Venus raced into the crowd to embrace sister Serena and father Richard after clinching the tie. "It's really great because I've been working so hard all my life to be here. This is unbelievable, and it is better than the men's cup in my opinion," she said sending the crowd into peals of laughter.

The twenty-year-old collected a cheque for 430,000 pounds for her efforts.

"She was playing really well throughout the tournament and I congratulate her on winning her first grand slam. I hope to be back here many times to try to win it again," said Lindsay Davenport.
