Statistical Highlights 5th match: Pakistan v Australia at Melbourne, 16-1-2000

Mohandas Menon

This match was the 1541st in Limited over international (LOI) history.

This match was Pakistan's 446th and Australia's 447th in LOIs.

This match was the 53rd meeting between the two sides.

Wasim Akram was playing in his 284th LOI match - now the maximum by a Pakistani player in LOIs. He went past Salim Malik's tally of 283 matches. Now only India's Mohammad Azharuddin - 323 - has played more matches than Wasim.

Moin Khan was appearing in his 150th match. He becomes the 12th Pakistani and the 41st batsman to do so.

Wasim Akram extended his world record by recording his 23rd duck of his career.

The wicket of Gilchrist was Shoaib Akhtar's 50th of his career. He becomes the 15th Pakistani and the 114th bowler in LOIs to do so. By reaching this milestone in his 29th match he became the third quickest Pakistani bowler after Waqar Younis (in 27 matches) and Saqlain Mushtaq (in 28 matches) to do so in least matches.

Michael Bevan (15) when on 2, became the seventh Australian to reach 4000 runs in LOIs. He now becomes the 35th batsman in LOI history to reach this milestone.

Steve Waugh's unbeaten 81 fell just one short of the highest score by an Australian number five against Pakistan. The best still remains as the 82 by Steve Waugh himself at Perth on 2-1-1987.

Waugh's 81* was now the third highest score by a number five batsman at this venue. Only Englishman David Gower (101* v Australia, 4-2-1979) and West Indian Jeff Dujon (82* v Australia, 12-2-1984) have higher scores at this position. However Waugh's score was the highest by an Australian at this venue at this position. It betters the unbeaten 78 by Dean Jones against England on 17-2-1985.

It was also the highest score made by an Australian captain against Pakistan. It betters the previous highest of 78 by Mark Taylor at Adelaide on 13-12-1992.

During his above innings, Steve Waugh playing in his 43rd match became the third batsman to score over 1000 runs at this venue after fellow Australians Allan Border (1516 runs in 60 matches) and Dean Jones (1287 runs in 35 matches). Waugh at the end of his innings has 1007 runs.

The match winning unbeaten partnership of 85 runs between Steve Waugh and Damien Martyn was Australia's best for the fifth wicket against Pakistan at this venue. It obliterates the previous best of 80 (also unbeaten) between Geoff Marsh and Graeme Wood on 10-1-1989.

It was Pakistan's first loss since its defeat in the World Cup final also against Australia in June, 1999. Since then it has played 11 LOI matches with the result being: won 9, tied 1 and lost one.

However by not losing a single match prior to this encounter Pakistan has equalled its best match sequence without defeat in LOIs. Pakistan from 27-4-1990 to 13-11-1990 had played in 10 matches without defeat.

The man of the match award was Steve Waugh's 20th of his career in his 280th match.
