Statistical Highlights 5th match: Zimbabwe v England at Kimberly, 30-1-2000

Mohandas Menon

This match was the 1553rd in Limited over international (LOI) history.

This match was Zimbabwe's 141st and England's 305th in LOIs.

This match was the 9th meeting between the two sides.

It was the only second LOI match to be played at this venue. The first match was between Pakistan and Sri Lanka on 7-4-1998. Pakistan had won by 4 wickets by scoring 300-6 while batting second.

Former Zimbabwean Graeme Hick became the seventh Englishman to appear in 100 or more matches in LOIs. He now becomes the 100th player in LOI history to reach this milestone, if we are to consider Kepler Wessels' combined total of 109 matches for Australia and South Africa as one.

The wicket of Andy Flower was Mark Ealham's 50th of his career in 43 matches. He becomes the 9th Englishman and the 118th bowler in LOI history to do so.

Ealham's 5-15 was the best bowling performance by an English bowler in LOIs. The previous best was the 5-20 by off-spinner Vic Marks against New Zealand at Wellington on 22-2-1984.

The previous best figures against Zimbabwe by an English bowler was the 5-44 by Darren Gough at Sydney on 15-12-1994.

The previous figures by an Englishman in South Africa was the 4-29 by Gough at Bloemfontein against South Africa on 23-1-2000.

It equals the best bowling figures by a bowler against Zimbabwe. Pakistani Wasim Akram had identical figures at Karachi on 24-12-1993.

It was Ealham's personal best figures bettering his previous best of 5-32 against Sri Lanka at Perth on 29-1-1999.

He now joins Vic Marks and Darren Gough as the only English bowler to capture five wickets in a match on more than one occasion.

Ealham had in fact taken five wickets for eight runs in just 24 balls and at one stage did not concede any run in 26 balls (4.2 overs).

Interestingly all his five victims were leg-before, which incidentally was a new record in LOIs. Previously, only two bowlers have had the distinction of claiming four "lbw" victims in a match. They were Australian Gary Gilmour (6-14) against England at Manchester on 18-6-1975 and Pakistani Wasim Akram (4-24) against Sri Lanka at Sharjah on 4-2-1993.

Just for the record, no English bowler have taken more than two "lbw" victims in a LOI match.

The previous maximum "lbw" victims involving Zimbabwe batsmen by a bowler was three by Australian Rodney Hogg (3-40) at Southampton on 16-6-1983.

The partnership of 128 runs between Naseer Hussain and Nick Knight was England's best for the first wicket against Zimbabwe. It obliterates the previous best of 49 runs between Graham Gooch and Mike Atherton at Sydney on 15-12-1994.

England recorded its only third win over the Zimbabwean in nine matches.

England's victory with 107 balls to spare was its best in a 50-over LOI match. It previous best win was against New Zealand at Auckland on 11-1-1992 when it won by 97 balls to spare.

It was Ealham's third man of the match award of his career in his 43rd match.
