limped home to Perth today after a week-long camp in Sydney that threw up more obstacles in the quest for Olympic gold. Injuries to fullback Jason Duff, halfback Daniel Sproule and striker Craig Victory have left the Kookaburras in a delicate state ahead of next week's three-Test series against Pakistan. Duff's knee blew up after training yesterday and while he played in today's 11-1 victory over the NSW Institute of Sport the Victorian will be running the gauntlet all the way to the Games. Sproule took no part in the camp due to a sudden back complaint and was being examined in Melbourne today, while Victory also sat out today with a sore lower back. And reserve fullback Murray Richards is in no position to march into the team, having been booked in for an arthroscopy today on an injured knee. Sproule missed last month's Champions Trophy with a broken hand and is a vital part of the Australian midfield. The only positive for the Australians was their work on penalty corners which could prove crucial next month. Duff had a knee reconstruction last November and made a miraculous comeback for the Champions Trophy in Amsterdam in May, only to strain a thigh muscle. Having missed out on the team for Atlanta the 27-year-old knows Sydney is probably his only shot at an Olympic Games. "He's still a bit of a worry," said coach Terry Walsh. "We've got to keep testing him and putting him under the pump. There wasn't enough pressure on him today to make it a good gauge but next week against Pakistan should be. "He's in the team but he's got to prove his fitness levels are up there. "We don't have six months to rest him and bring him back up. He knows there's a risk we run with that, but the Olympics is a very attractive scene." The pencil-thin Victory burst into the Australian team last year at 19 but already this year has suffered severe bruising of the foot and food poisoning in Amsterdam. "He's a young guy with a lot of hockey under his belt. Jug (Duff) doesn't have that so he's pushed into a situation where he has to play," Walsh said. Pakistan will bring a 17-man squad to Australia and New Zealand, then cut one player for the Olympics. Six weeks ago the country was in its usual turmoil, with the Pakistan Hockey Federation president sacked and the coach quitting in protest. That prompted former greats Shahbaz Ahmed and Mansoor Ahmed to put their hands up for the Olympics but they didn't show at the trials and weren't picked.
