How they performed in ODIs in 1999

Harsha Bhogle

India's ODI performance in 1999-00 vis-a-vis the opponents

  Played Won Lost NR
Home 10 6 4 -
Away 27 9 17 1
Total 37 15 21 1

First the good news. India only played 37 one-dayers in the year which is about 10 more than ideal but about 13 less than some people would have liked them to. It also shows how much India traveled. 27 out of 37 were played away. It is something India seem to enjoy doing because the career records posted on Rediff a couple of days ago show that each of the lead players played almost twice as many games away as they did at home. A 6/4 record at home vs a 9/17 record away. Maybe we should be playing a lot more at home. It will make our averages look a lot better as well. Check out our posting on the home and away career averages !

Summary for the 27 players

Matches Innings NO Runs Avg 100s 50s 0s S/r
37 325 59 7164 26.93 10 28 22 70.10 runs per 100 balls

*1. This tells you why Sourav Ganguly has been India's one-day batsman of the year. 11 scores of above 50 out of 36 innings and a very good strike rate. He scored runs at home and overseas and confirmed what we have known for a couple of years now; that he is one of only two match winners India have.

2. The second match-winner struggled a bit. Very good average but only 6 scores greater than 50 from 28 games means that his deviation from average is perhaps very high. That 186* would do his average no harm but he needs to be more consistent. Put it down to a slightly below par season.

3. The wicket keeper scored no runs at all this year. 26 innings produced 276 runs and given that he is expected to bat at number 7, it tells you why India's tail for so visible.

4. What happens if the lead players aren't around? Or don't score runs? Can we expect the newer ("alternate"?) batsmen to score runs? Between them, Jacob Martin, VVS Laxman, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Amay Khurasia and Debang Gandhi made 299 runs from 26 innings.

5. Is the lower order helping out? Check out Kumble, Srinath, the "wicket keeper", Chopra and Agarkar. Now try and remember when the tail made a reasonable contribution.

1. It used to be said that any bowler who went for less than 4 an over was very good. To be fair that needs to be upgraded to 4.5 ( 5.5 if you play in Dhaka ! ). On that count only three bowlers qualify this year. Nikhil Chopra was consistent as usual but Venkatesh Prasad is a bit of a revelation. We thought he was past it didn't we? He has an economy rate of 4.3 and takes a wicket every 46 balls which isn't brilliant (look at the best of the opposition) but in a poor bowling side, it will do.

2. The Tendulkar of India's bowlers had a mixed season as well. By his standards, an economy rate of 4.87 would be unacceptable to Kumble.

3. The revelation of the pack is Debashish Mohanty. Just 15 games and 23 wickets (1.5 per game is very good) at one every 30 balls which would qualify him for a place among the best and an economy rate of 4.77 which could be better but which isn't the end of the world.

4. We are looking for all-rounders. There is a decent one hiding there only he doesn't play consistently enough. Sunil Joshi scores 237 from 15 innings at a strike rate of well over 100 and then with the ball he takes 24 wickets at a strike rate of 42 balls per wicket and an outstanding economy rate of 4.21. Not bad for a man batting at number eight and happy to bat anywhere else !

5. Now what about the one man everyone has been talking about as India's next all-rounder. 8 innings produced 44 runs at an average of just over 6 and a strike rate of 57. Worse, as bowler 14 matches have only produced 11 wickets at an average of 57, a strike of 67 balls per wicket and a poor economy rate of 5.11 which is pretty much par for his career. Don't we need to evaluate?
