Match No: 1 (Quarter-final) - NORTH ZONE v SOUTH ZONE
At Maharaja Bir Bikram College Stadium, Agartala on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 December,
1999. Match Drawn (North Zone moved into the semi-final by virtue of the
first innings lead).
North Zone 589 (P Dharmani 59, R Nayyar 118, V Shewag 274; SB Joshi 4-113)
& 257-8 decl. (V Rathour 93, Shakti Singh 37; AR Kapoor 3-124, SLV Raju
5-62); South Zone 424 (VST Naidu 55, JR Madanagopal 84, S Sharath 149 not out, SB
Joshi 75) & 100-1 (A Nandakishore 51 not out, S Mahesh 42).
Nayyar (118, 603 mins, 469 balls, 11 fours) and Shewag (274 in 416 mins,
327 balls, 4 sixes, 36 fours) added a record 381 runs partnership for the
fifth wicket. The partnership was in fact the highest ever for any wicket
in the tourmament. The previous highest was the 320 run partnership for the
3rd wicket between Ajit Wadekar and Dilip Sardesai for West Zone against
Central Zone at Bombay in 1972-73.
The previous highest for the fifth
wicket in the Duleep Trophy was the 285 put on by Amol Muzumdar and Abhijit
Kale for West Zone against North Zone at Indore inn 1995-96.

Wasin Jaffer (173* in 613 mins, 431 balls, 22 fours) became only the second
batsman to carry his bat in this tournament. West Zone SS Bhave (28* /
103) was the only other batsman to do so against East Zone at Surat in
1993-94.
North Zone have now won the title on 14 occasions, which equals the record of
West Zone.
