Statistical Highlights 3rd match: Aiwa Cup, India v Sri Lanka at Colombo (Premadasa) on 25-8-99 (D/N)

Mohandas Menon

This match was the 1487th in limited over international (LOI) history.

This match was India's 407th and Sri Lanka's 304th in LOIs.

This match was the 61st meeting between the two sides.

This was the 350th day-night LOI match. Just for the record, the first day-night LOI match was played between Australia and West Indies at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 17-11-79, nearly twenty years ago!

During their first wicket partnership of 49, Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar overtook the first-wicket run aggregate tally of 608 (avg 40.53) in 15 innings by Pakistanis Aamer Sohail and Saeed Anwar, to became the opening pair with maximum run aggregate against Sri Lanka in LOIs. The Indian pair has now taken its tally to 646 runs (avg 53.83) in 12 innings.

Tendulkar's run-out was his 18th of his career in 213 matches. Now only Azharuddin (30 run-out) has been dismissed on more occasions among Indians.

Upul Chandana captured his 50th wicket when he claimed his second wicket of the innings -that of Jadeja. He was playing in his 55th match. He now becomes the 13th Sri Lankan and the 109th bowler in LOI history to reach this milestone.

The unbeaten partnership of 23 between Nikhil Chopra and Javagal Srinath was India's highest for the ninth wicket against Sri Lanka in a day-night encounter.

Sanath Jayasuriya's 61 was his first fifty-plus score after six matches. He had last scored a fifty (50 retired hurt) against Australia at Perth on 31-1-1999.

Jayasuriya during his above innings became the batsman with the highest run aggregate against India in a day-night encounter. He has now scored 563 runs in 13 matches which surpasses the previous tally of 544 runs by Kepler Wessels in 10 matches for both Australia and South Africa.

The unbeaten partnership of 61 between Marvan Atapattu and Indika deSaram was Sri Lanka's best against India for the fourth wicket at this venue surpassing the previous best of 41 between Aravinda deSilva and Arjuna Ranatunga on 19-6-1998.

Anil Kumble equalled the worst wicket-less sequence of his career, when he failed to capture a wicket for the third successive LOI match. In fact he has gone wicketless on four occasions in the last five matches. He had captured two wickets in the WC match against Pakistan.

Sachin Tendulkar has now lost 33 matches as captain and has also lost his last three matches as captain including the match against Sri Lanka at Goa on 28-12-97 which was during his first phase as captain.

The Sri Lankan victory was its first after six successive defeats against India. Its last victory over India was at the Sinhalese ground on 1-7-1998.

It was India third successive defeat in LOIs. It had earlier lost to New Zealand in the WC and then to Australia in this tournament.

It was Sri Lanka's 19th victory at this venue in 29 matches.

It was Atapattu's seventh Man of the match award of his career. He was playing in his 76th match.

This venue seems to be Atapattu's favourite ground. It ten matches and innings he has now scored 661 runs at an average of 94.43! He also has a hundred and five fifties to his credit at this venue.

It is therefore not surprising that he has now won the maximum number of MOM awards at this venue than any other player. It was his fourth award. Former Sri Lankan skipper Ranatunga had won three awards at this venue.
