Sikdar sweeps to gold

Jyotirmoyee Sikdar Gritty Jyotirmoyee Sikdar ran to glory and gold in the 1500 m with a career-best 4:12.82, while compatriot Sunita Rani claimed the bronze at the 13th Asiad here on Monday.

In the men's 400m, Punjab Police's Paramjit Singh, who had erased the 38-year-old record of 'Flying Sikh' Milkha Singh, was pushed to the third place (45.93 rpt 45.93 seconds).

Sikdar ran to glory and gold with a career-best time of 4:12.82, improving her previous best of 4:14.32 which she had clocked at the Asian Track and Field meet at Fukuoka (Japan) early this year.

Parmajit failed to improve his timing of 45.70 sec set at the Calcutta interstate meet last month when he broke Milkha's record.

Rachitra Mistry won the bronze in women's 100 metres in a photofinish. Asian record holder Li Xuemei won the gold in 11.05 sec while Yali Li(also of China) took the silver.

China's Wang Qingfen won the silver with 4:13.19 in the 1500 metres.

India's strongest medal hope, P T Usha, finished a disappointing sixth in the 400 metres, which was won by Sri Lankan Damayanthi Darsha while China's Chen Yuxiang claimed silver.

Usha clocked 54.37 while Darsha finished way ahead with 51.57. Chen had a timing of 52.50. Bronze was won by svetlana Bodritskaya with 53.00 sec.
