March of young Gandhis creates world record

Children dressed as Mahatma Gandhi took part in a peace march in Kolkata on Sunday, on the eve of the 64th death anniversary of the Father of the Nation.

As many as 485 children from the organisation Training Resource and Care for Kids, a charity for single mothers and children living without support at railway stations, took part in the peace march.

The march found its place in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the largest gathering of people dressed as Mahatma Gandhi.

The march broke the record of the last such gathering of people dressed as the Mahatma, when 255 students in Gandhian attire had gathered in Coimbatore, in June 2010.

Meanwhile, President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh led the country in paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi. Patil, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Dr Singh paid floral tributes at Gandhi's memorial in Rajghat at New Delhi.

A two-minute silence in memory of the Father of the Nation was also observed.

United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Defence Minister A K Antony, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader L K Advani, chiefs of three services, central ministers, leaders of various political parties and people from different walks of life also paid tributes to the apostle of peace at his memorial.
