The toll in the train collision at Chitheri near Arakkonam on Tuesday night has risen to 10 with the death of a woman on Thursday, police said.
"The toll is now 10. The victim was a woman," Inspector General of Police (North Range), C Sylendra Babu said.

The mishap, which killed nine persons and injured over 100, occurred on Tuesday night when a speeding passenger train rammed into a stationary train at Chitheri, about 90 km from Chennai, derailing five coaches.

The driver of the Chennai Beach-Vellore Cantonment Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit train that crashed into the Arakkonam-Katpadi passenger as it was waiting for signal clearance here around 9.40 pm on Tuesday night also jumped out of his cabin just before the collision near Arakkonam junction, railway officials said.

Rescue workers used gas cutters to help pull out the trapped passengers from the derailed bogies while two cranes were pressed into service to clear the tracks.

Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi, who visited the hospital in Chennai where the injured have been admitted, said a comprehensive probe would be launched to ascertain if the accident occurred due to human error or technical fault.

Meanwhile, train services on Chennai-Arakkonam sector, which was halted after the train accident at Sitheri about 90 km from here last night, killing nine persons, resumed on Wednesday evening.
