A lightning strike has killed 18 children and their teacher in Uganda, police said. Uganda has one of the highest rates of lightning strike deaths in the world and its capital Kampala has more days of lightning per year than any other city, according to the World Meteorological Organisation.

University students struggle with riot police as they try to march on the road toward the presidential Blue House during an anti-government rally in central Seoul. About 8,000 protesters including students, farmers, workers and citizens participated in the rally to demand conglomerate-friendly, anti-North Korean, conservative and right-wing President Lee Myung-bak stop the plan to go for the free trade agreement between the US and South Korea, fulfil his presidential election pledge to cut tuition fees by half and raise minimum wages, which is currently 4,320 Korean won an hour.

Police in central Cairo fired tear gas on Wednesday at hundreds of mainly young stone-throwing Egyptians demanding that trials of former senior officials from the discredited Mubarak era proceed faster. Clashes broke out late on Tuesday in an area of the capital where some families of the more than 840 people killed in the uprising that led to President Hosni Mubarak's overthrow in February held an event to honour those dead.
