Tension prevailed in parts of Hyderabad on Wednesday following the late night arrest of a 25-year-old youth.
Although Hyderabad police are not confirming the arrest, the youth's family members told rediff.com that he was picked up late Tuesday night by the police from his workshop.
Mukhumuddin Yaseer, the youth who reportedly has been picked up, is the brother of Mohammad Ghouse alias Riazuddin Nasir -- the man arrested in Karnataka recently for allegedly plotting a terror attack in the state.
Neither Hyderabad police nor the Intelligence Bureau confirmed the arrest, but the family members told rediff.com that just before Yaseer was picked up, he had called up the residence stating that he was being taken away by the police.
Lateef Mohammad Khan, secretary, Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee told rediff.com that the charge the police were trying to level against Yaseer was that he may have sheltered anti-social elements.
Lateef added that he had tried contacting the police for more information but they were not confirming the arrest.
Yaseer's mother, Tasneem Fatima, said her son, who owned a workshop at the Alapura locality, was picked up by the Special Investigating Team as he was shutting shop. Just before being taken away, he had called to inform what was happening. However, later on she was unable to get through to him as his cell phone was switched off.
"I tried contacting the commissioner of police, but did not get any answer from him," she claimed.
Fatima now plans to go on a hunger strike in front of the Commissioner's office if details regarding her son are not revealed.
Khan said that even if Yaseer had committed an offence, the police should come out in the open and make public the arrest. Picking up a man in this fashion amounts to abduction is a gross violation of human rights, he added.
