Bangladesh is 'disappointed' over the last-minute decision by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to drop out of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's upcoming visit to the country.
"We will be disappointed if she does not come as she is a great friend of Bangladesh and she has a great following in this country and is a close friend of our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina," Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's foreign affairs adviser Gawher Rizvi told mediapersons.
But he said Bangladesh was sure that she would visit the country very soon and a very warm welcome awaits her. The issue that has prompted her to scrap her planned visit is an internal matter of India, he said.
"But we know that even if she is unable to come on Tuesday, she will visit Bangladesh very soon and a very warm welcome awaits when she arrives," Rizvi said.
According to media reports, Banerjee cancelled her tour as she is unhappy with Teesta water-sharing treaty to be signed during Singh's visit as there were differences between the earlier drafts and the one that is going to be signed.
The reports said Banerjee was concerned about certain portions of the draft agreement as she did not "want the deal to harm her state's interest in any way".
Banerjee, the reports said, also reasoned floods in her state and upcoming Durga Puja for her not being able to fly down to Dhaka along with four other chief ministers of Indian states bordering Bangladesh.
"Mamata Banerjee's concern is not directed at Bangladesh. It is something between West Bengal and New Delhi," Rizvi said.
