China bristles and fumes when The Dalai Lama meets a leader from any country, which is why most leaders avoid meeting the spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people.

Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi and Home Minister Amit Anilchandra Shah -- the two most powerful men in India -- have yet to meet His Holiness, but significantly, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat -- arguably, the third most powerful person in the ruling dispensation -- on Monday, December 20, met the Dalai Lama at Gaden Phodrang, his home in Mcleodganj, Himachal Pradesh.

The Dalai Lama's meeting with Bhagwat was only his second in-person meeting after he was permitted to do so during the pandemic -- his first was with Sikyong Penpa Tsering, who heads the Tibetan government in exile.
