Jagat Singh, son of former external affairs minister Natwar Singh, made sudden appearance at the office of the Directorate of Enforcement in Lodhi Complex in New Delhi on Thursday morning. He had been summoned by ED officials on Tuesday for questioning but he sent a medical certificate saying that he is not well and hence he would not be able to come.
Jagat in his interaction with the media during the last one and a half months had asked if the ED thought that he or his father were in way involved in oil for food scam. If so, the officials investigating the matter should summon him.
Enforcement directorate had grilled his friend and owner of the Hamadan Exports Andaleeb Sehgal over last forty five days ever since the UN report on the food for oil scam was made public which showed that Natwar Singh and the congress party were non-contractual beneficiaries.
A team of ED officials visited Jordan and Iraq last week and has since returned to India after collecting evidence against Jagat Singh's alleged involvement in the entire deal.
Former Indian ambassador to Croatia Aneil Mathrani had alleged that Jagat Singh and Andaleeb Sehgal were unofficially went about posing as part of the Congress delegation and was led by Natwar Singh and had visited Iraq in January 2001 to express solidarity with the former Iraqi strong man Saddam Hussein.
Jagat's grilling is likely to go on for several hours.
