A police sub-inspector was suspended on Thursday after a video purportedly showing him beating a man at a roadside eatery went viral, officials said.
The suspended sub-inspector, Ravindra Baliyan, was posted at the Aasam outpost under the Sungarhi police station in Pilibhit district.
The alleged incident took place at an eatery on Bisalpur Road, where Baliyan had gone to get the lights switched off.
According to police, Baliyan allegedly slapped and beat a man named Kashiram without any clear provocation.
The victim claimed he sustained injuries after he was beaten with a stick.
After a video of the alleged assault circulated widely on social media, SP Sukirti Madhav Mishra ordered a probe into the matter and suspended Baliyan.
Circle officer Deepak Chaturvedi said further action will be taken based on the investigation report.
