The Pakistani troops violated the bilateral ceasefire on the Line of Control in the Poonch district of Jammu region on Saturday night.

The army had foiled an infiltration bid in the Saujiyan sector on Saturday after alert troops observed movement of some militants who ran towards the LoC after the troops opened fire.

A defence spokesman said on Sunday that the Pakistan army started unprovoked firing using small arms and automatic weapons in the Mendhar sector of Poonch district last night (Saturday).

“Our troops retaliated using weapons of similar calibre. No damage or casualties have been reported,” he added.

This is the second ceasefire violation in past one week in Poonch.

India and Pakistan had agreed to a bilateral ceasefire along the Line of Control and international border in November 2003, which held nicely for several years.

However, last year there were scores of ceasefire violations following which the military commanders of both sides met to defuse tensions.
