Two policemen were killed in a terrorist shootout in north Kashmir Handwara town, 80 kms from capital Srinagar on Saturday morning. A senior police officer said that the terroriosts fired at the two cops from a close range in the main bus stand in Handwara town of Kupwara district.

“The two received critical bullet injuries and were rushed to hospital where they succumbed,” the officer said. Senior police and security force officers rushed to the spot immediately and searches were mounted in and around the bus stand.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. This is the first terrorist attack on the police in Kashmir this year. Kashmir has witnessed protests, clashes and shutdowns following the hanging of the parliament attack convict Afzal Guru on February 9 in Tihar jail.
