Train driver averts major mishap near Wardha

An alert locomotive driver of Chennai-Chhapra Ganga Kaveri Express averted a major collision on the track at Bhugaon station near Wardah, official sources said on Monday.

The incident occurred on Sunday when Ganga Kaveri was fast approaching Chitoda station and the driver noticed derailed empty coal wagons on the track at Bhugaon station. He immediately applied the emergency brakes and brought the train to a grinding halt, officials said.

The 12 empty wagons of a coal rake derailed while being unloaded. The track has now been restored for traffic, Nagpur division, Central Railway PRO Y K Singh said on Monday.

Grand Trunk Express, Tamil Nadu Express, Secunderabad Rajdhani Express, Indore Express, Sampark Kranti Express were affected due to the derailment, he added.
